Huey D. Johnson Scholarship

Eligibility: New Students

Date of notification: Accompanied with admission decision (ongoing)

Application requirement: None

Established by the Fred Gellert Family Foundation, the Huey D. Johnson scholarship provides tuition support to a student showing promise in environmental policy and business management, and will be awarded at the discretion of the President. The scholarship honors the legendary California environmentalist Huey Johnson, founder and president of the Resource Renewal Institute, former president of the Nature Conservancy and, from 1976-1982, Secretary of Resources for the State of California. During his tenure in that post, he established conservation programs that doubled salmon populations, strengthened forestry regulations, preserved millions of acres of California wilderness, and protected more than 1,200 miles of wild rivers.

Huey Johnson has also been the recipient of numerous awards, including the President’s Award for Sustainable Development in 1996 and the Sasakawa Prize, awarded by the United Nations in 2001 to honor his outstanding contributions to the environment.
