Presidio Releases First Sustainable Business Case Study

Presidio Graduate School today announced the release of Presidio’s first published teaching case study. Professors Dwight Collins and Dariush Rafinejad, Co-Chairs of the Presidio’s faculty Research and Case Development Committee, worked with recent Presidio MBA Graduate Jenny Hoang to develop the case, entitled “A Tale of Three Bins.” The case was developed while Ms. Hoang was in the fourth semester of her graduate studies at Presidio.

The case study documents the steps taken by Sabre Holdings, Inc., a $3B travel and tourism software company (and the firm behind Travelocity.com), to dramatically increase the diversion rate of solid waste generated by its 3000 person Southlake, TX headquarters from 36 percent to 80 percent within a year. In addition, the case analyzes Sabre Holdings’ application of principles of systems thinking, taught to Presidio MBA students in their first semester Principles of Sustainable Management course.

“This is the first of a kind, a high quality case study written by a Presidio student under the guidance of Presidio faculty” stated William Shutkin, Presidio’s President. “It represents a milestone for Presidio’s degree programs and an important piece of intellectual property for use at and beyond the school for teaching sustainable management.”

The case sponsor was Ms. Leilani Latimer, Senior Director of Sustainability Initiatives at Sabre Holdings. Ms. Latimer, an established and widely reputed marketing professional, received her Executive Certificate in Sustainable Management from Presidio Graduate School in 2009. She led the solid waste reduction initiative documented in the case.

Seeing the opportunity to share the knowledge of how to design and manage a large scale waste diversion project with other companies, Ms. Latimer approached Presidio Interim Dean Edward Quevedo in late 2011 with the offer to sponsor the development of Presidio’s first teaching case.

Funding for the case effort was provided by both Presidio and the Collins Educational Foundation. The case has been published on the Sabre Holdings Sustainability Blog and by Presidio for use within its MBA, Masters of Public Administration, and MBA/MPA Dual Degree programs, and for use by other universities and corporations seeking to educate students and practitioners in principles of sustainable management. Presidio’s Research and Case Development Committee is planning for the production of a small number of sustainable management case studies each semester by Presidio students and alumni working under an independent study elective option.
