Join the Presidio Graduate School on April 30 for its symposium event, Outgrowing GDP: A New Approach to America’s Accounting System.

Gross National Product (GDP) is the dominant measure of national welfare, and drives nearly every aspect of economic policy. However, GDP ignores or devalues key components of prosperity, including natural capital, social capital, and quality of life. In fact, in many cases, a focus on GDP growth encourages the deterioration of ecological, social, or financial welfare. Outgrowing GDP will explore existing and emerging alternatives to the GDP such as the Genuine Progress Indicator and Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness, and explore how we can bring these alternatives into wider use.

Outgrowing GDP is a half-day event featuring individual talks, panel-style discussion, and Q&A with:

• Nizar Abdullah, Adjunct Professor and Board Member, Presidio Graduate School·

• Lew Daly, of Demos, author of Beyond GDP: New Measures for a New Economy

• Jacques Leslie, Pulitzer Prize nominated journalist currently reporting on Bhutan’s Happiness Index

• Maggie Winslow, PhD, Associate Professor of Environmental Management, University of San Francisco

• William Shutkin, CEO and President of the Presidio Graduate School

• Dan Sevall, Adjunct Professor of Accounting and Fred Gellert Family Foundation Faculty, Presidio Graduate School

Light breakfast and lunch is included. The event will take place in the auditorium at the offices of Bloomberg LP, Pier 3, Embarcadero, San Francisco, 94111. Outgrowing GDP is sponsored by the Fred Gellert Family Foundation. Presidio also thanks our event partner Bloomberg L.P. for providing the venue.
